1. Explore push/pull factors like political, economic, and individual freedoms that caused many people to immigrate to the US; examine and evaluate “what it means to be an American?” by understanding the concept of the “Melting Pot”, multiculturalism, assimilation and acculturation 

UNIT 2:

1. Explore evolution of people’s participation in government; identify and explain evolution of voting in America; appraise impact of the media and political parties and influence on election process

1. Interpret the US Constitution, Bill of Rights and amendments; examine and explain concept of checks and balances and federalism

1. Examine and analyze the powers of the Federal Legislative Branch

Significant Task UNIT 1:

1. Analyze and evaluate census figures, draw conclusions, read for information and write a responsive essay. 

UNIT 2:

1. Chart information and evaluate evolution of participation in government; develop political campaign material after research.

UNIT 3:

1. Read, compare and evaluate the amendments; graphic organizers (Venn) to compare separate vs shared powers; cooperative group decision making task.  

UNIT 4: Read and gather information; review the legislative process; write a five paragraph essay.

UNIT 5:

1. Compare role of president with graphic organizers; research an executive department (team approach) and create an informative poster; take notes  

UNIT 6: Read biographies about judicial candidates, draw conclusions, evaluate information, make a decision;

UNIT 7: Read and evaluate significant Supreme Court cases and write a court opinion
