1. Evaluate Reconstruction and determine if the process was a success or a failure.

1. Examine the economic theories concerning land, resources, labor, and capital and its impact on the rise of industry.

1. Trace patterns of immigrant settlement in different areas of the country and the impact on American culture. 

2. Examine the tensions resulting from massive immigration to the United States.

2. Evaluate the gains made by the progressive and Populist Movements. 

UNIT 5: 

1. Examine the causes and aftermath of World War I 

2. Evaluate the Treaty of Versailles and its impact on Europe and the United States.

UNIT 6: 

1. Assess the expanded role of expanded role of government in the national economy beginning with the New Deal in the 1930s.

UNIT 7:

1. Examine the rise and fall of the axis powers and the causes of World War II.

1. Compare and contrast the causes and effects of the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War.   

The collapse of Communism and the ends of the Cold War.   

UNIT 9: 

1. Evaluate the Brown v. Board of Education decisions and its impact on education.   

2. Examine the Civil Rights Movement including Civil Rights legislation and social activism. 

Significant Task UNIT 1: 

1. Write a State of the Union Address offering detailed evaluation of Reconstruction as a success or a failure.

UNIT 3: 

1. Research immigration patterns as well as hardships facing immigrants, and create a journal of a young immigrant in the United States.

UNIT 4: 

1. Research Populist and Progressive Era Reformers and evaluate their contributions to American Society. Plan a birthday party and where students are required to make a birthday card based on the person they research.  Use a decision making matrix and write an essay evaluating the historical figures.   

UNIT 5: 

1. Examine propaganda posters and assess the impact WWI had on US public opinion of Germany and the War.  Create their own propaganda poster to influence US opinion in support of the war and in opposition to Germany.

UNIT 6: 

Teacher Choices: 

1.  Research New Deal Programs and Complete a Chart.  Based on the chart create a fireside chat. 

2.  Research artists and writers of the period and create their own piece of art and literature based on the person they research. 

3.  Analyze advertisements from the 1920s as well as present day ads and determine their underlying meanings.  Students will write a comparison of present ads and 1920s ads.   

UNIT 7:

1. Create a magazine about WWII including:  News Articles, Graphics, Letters to the editor, Back page commentary, Political or Satirical Cartoon, and Cover Page. 

UNIT 8: 

Teacher Choices: 

1.  Create a Political Cartoon or Editorial Cartoon

2.  Interview Vietnam War Vets and share their findings.

3.  Compose song lyrics that either support or protest the war.

4.  Explain, was Truman justified in firing General MacArthur. 

UNIT 9: 

Teacher Choices:

1.  Create a Civil Rights Timeline, 1963-1965

2.  Evaluate Speeches made by a 2 Civil Rights Leaders and write a 5 paragraph essay.

3.  Create a News Article and Layout about the Birmingham Protests
